We are sill in St. Petersburg Florida following the evacuation of the marina
at Naval Air Station Key West prior to Wilma's arrival and subsequent damage
to the marina there. It has been very frustrating for us in that we have had
a most difficult time in obtaining any real information on the status of the
marina other than the fact that the marina was damaged and that the Navy Base
still remained closed to us and we were not allowed to return to our boat.
Slowly I have been able to get information on the actual status. I have now
confirmed from three sources that Serendipity apparently sustained no damage
from the Hurricane and in fact I had one of my friends who works at the marina
start and run her engines two days ago. We had not returned to the marina yet
because it is a seven hour drive down to the marina and not being allowed to
remain on the boat we have no place to stay down there ( over $100.00 a night
for a hotel in Key West would not be a viable option for us for any length of
time) thus we have remained here at our friends home where I am sure we are
beginning to wear out our welcome after two weeks.
Today I finally spoke with someone at the marina with actual knowledge of the
situation and was told that it will probably be at least a month before even
water and power can be restored to the docks and then it will only be to some
of the docks and not all. Further, it will then probably be months before the
marina can be restored to anything resembling it's pre-hurricane status. I
am told that there are approximately 20 boats sunk in the marina and that even
the concrete docks are cracked in a few places and will have to be replaced.
Rebuilding the marina is not a high priority for the Navy, thus the extended
time period to do so.
As a result of the above information we have decided to relocate our boat and
it appears that we will be taking the boat north to Green Cove Springs, FL as
we have knowledge of a very protected marina at a reasonable rate up on the
St. Johns River. Actually we had investigated this marina earlier this year
as a location to get away from "hurricane alley" but had decided to go ahead
and remain in Key West on the theory that the chances of a hurricane hitting
Key West was small, yes...we regret that decision now.
There are a couple of side benefits of relocating the boat to near
Jacksonville. For one, as I have the boat for sale it should be easier to
show as Key West is not exactly on the beaten path. Secondly, Jacksonville
has an excellent Heart Center where I can seek treatment for my aneurysm.
Now I just have to work out the logistics.
