    i always start with idle but often bump one of the throttle depending on
    conditions. i think I rarely exceed 1200 ...

    when turning out of the slip, i use full rudder and some extra RPM on the
    fwd wheel to help kick the stern and turn faster. When coming in, i will
    usually use some RPM on the reversed side to kill momentum and start pulling
    the stern in.

    really depends on the boat, conditions, etc... i guess the correct answer
    is as little as possible. regardless of trannies, always shift at idle and
    let the prop stop.
