I have the same Cummins diesels as Al and don't quite understand the issue.
The turbos only kick in when the throttle is advanced beyond half way, and
someone concerned about fuel economy could simply refrain from advancing the
throttles that far. Yes, it might require storing a few more spare parts,
but that's a small price to bear, compared to paying to remove the turbo and
associated parts. I could see the purpose of removing the turbo from a
Corvette owned by a youngster, but don't understand how or why it's needed
aboard trawlers, where you're free to set the throttles as low as you want.
