There is a neat toy that you can buy to prevent your bilge pumps from
pumping oil. West Marine sells it for about $50 or so. However, what
the tech types give, they also take away.

If the sensor gets a trace of oil, it won't allow the pump to run. In
other words, you can have a bilge full of water and a trace amount of
oil on the sensor and the bilge pump won't pump. I had this happen
recently and at the time it could have been, but was not, deadly.

If you have or install one of these things, you will have to add a
circuit to allow forcing the pump to run, bypassing the sensor.
Otherwise, you can find yourself with pumps that for all intents and
purposes don't work. If this happens at night in a storm, you may not
have time to curse or find the cause, or fix it.

    Regards,
    Mike
