Hi John,
Thanks for the response but if you had seen my first post about this problem
you would understand my plight. Antifreeze is vanishing!!! There is none
in the bilge or drip pan. I don't have an expansion tank but there is a
hose from the radiator cap like one that would go into a tank and I've run
that into a jug and the antifreeze isn't going there either. Now this all
happens within the first 1/2 hour of running time. A gallon will vanish in
the first 1/2 hr. I removed the core and pressure tested it and found no
leaks. Therefor it doesn't seem like it could be getting past the core and
going out with the exhaust but it's definitely not in the boat, Not in the
oil pan and a gallon cold not evaporate as steam in 1/2 hr either.
Another responded that he had a cracked manifold that opened up under heat
and pressure. Well he said his was aluminum and mine is cast iron. He also
didn't say what kind of engine he had but I was under the impression that
all perkins were iron.
Anyway, I've put it all back together and took extra care to insure that the
gaskets and O rings that surround the core and seperate the antifreeze from
the raw water are not suspect. I won't be able to take the boat out till
next week so we'll have to wait till then to see if I've done any good.
I'll post the results next weekend sometime.
Thanks

Subject: T&T: Perkins T63544 Heat Exchanger
Greg,
I can't respond to the list from this address so I will send it directly
to you. My response, you have no problem. I had the same symptoms going on
with my Perkins 354-6s. You fill them to the top, run them hard and, every
time, the level is down in the heat exchanger like you described. It is, in
my opinion, caused by normal expansion in the system. The anti-freeze is
being pumped out by the radiator cap when pressure exceeds the poundage of
the cap and into the bilge. I put on an expansion tank, like on a car, and
the fluid is pumped to the tank when it's hot and sucked back in when the
engines cool down. After that, every time I check the engine, it is full.
And I never lost anymore fluid. Hope this is your non-problem!
