Bentt, I'm sorry that you feel that the Canal du Midi is worth a one-time visit only. We (my sister and brother-in-law and other family members and I) have done the Canal du Midi twice so far and are likely to do it again. In fact I am sending this from France -- we will be going to our rented townhouse along that canal on Saturday. We've taken the house, built over two-hundred years ago, in a tiny village called le Somail. It is one of the many villages along the canal that we simply couldn't get enough of when we were on a rented boat, so we look forward to spending 10 days there and being able to explore by car. And to sit outside our house and watch the boats go by, and the slow waters of the canal itself, as we share our 1.50 Euro bottle of local wine and some fresh bread.
Each village along the way has its own special character, and the land varies as you go as well as the canal experience. I vividly remember the switch-backs that the canal makes east of Trebes: the canal is a green snake raised slightly from the very "Mediterranean" grape fields. It is shaded by huge old "plane trees" which serve also to hold the banks with their root systems. Bright hot sunshine and cool deep shade curving through it. . . oh yes, I'll go again. I can't wait to share it with Hans someday, when he is no longer captive of his job.
I believe it's partly about what you're boating for, and what you get out of where you are. I love the Canal du Midi.
