Ahmet,
With the addition of the isolation transformer, the safety ground from shore
is no longer connected through to the boat circuits. It terminates at a
copper plate inside the transformer, which is NOT CONNECTED to anything
else. The incoming AC shore power lines, and ONLY these lines, both hot and
neutral go to the primary winding of the transformer; the boat hot and
neutral goes to the secondary, and the safety ground now goes to the ships
ground system, or if not bonded, to a plate ground, such as a dynaplate.
This means that the boat electricity is now "floating" (no longer uses the
ground as a return). It also means that there is no DC path from anything
AC on the boat to shore, as AC will not go through a transformer. NB, THIS
DOES NOT INCLUDE AN AUTOTRANSFORMER which does not offer any isolation
benefits.
This is not a good do-it-yourself project unless you fully understand the
principles involved. Any good ship's electrician should be able to properly
hook up an isolation transformer.

I don't understand this process.
If the shore ground is connected to my boat with both the Neutral and Hot
leads open, and if there is a DC current measurable in the ground wire,
causing electrolysis, how is the isolation transformer going to have any
effect on the electrolysis ?
I can understand why a galvanic isolator or a couple of galvanic isolators
in series with the ground wire would reduce or eliminate the DC current
causing the electrolysis, but I don't understand the effect of the
transformer. (Just can't learn how to form shorter sentences.)
Can you explain please or is it just a semantics issue ?
Thanks,
Ahmet
