The choice of fuel is a somewhat complex issue.
Gasoline and diesel represents the most compact and energy efficient means of
storing the maximum energy density in a readily accessible form.
While propane and even natural gas can be used as fuel on what is basically a
gasoline type spark ignition engine, these represent less energy capacity for a
given storage volume.
Diesel gensets do not represent a cost effective choice when portability is a
major consideration. They weigh too much, are noisy and require more vibration
dampening compared to a gasoline engine. For land use as back-up power
gasoline engines represent the most convenient choice. Fuel is readily
available. you can pick 7up small containers of replacement fuel or even siphon
it from the family transportation or borrrow from a neighbor.
This is not such an easy option when dealing with propane.
Diesel makes sense for constantly and nearly fully loaded gensets where load
variability is not as great.
My own choice would also be a Yamaha or better a Honda EU series.
I'm currently doing research into exactly such an application but using
methane from farm sources. Diesels are great on a boat but rate poorly for
land based applications and light loading.
