On my first boat, I did not use a snubber. In fact, in my ignorance, I didn
t even know what one was. Then my captain discovered a small grease leak
from the Maxwell windlass. When I finally tracked down the importer for the
Maxwell, I was told that a snubber should ALWAYS be used with an all chain
rode. Even in the calmest anchorage, there is some small motion and that the
constant jerk on the chain, however imperceptible, is a strain on the
windlass. ALWAYS use a snubber was the advice from the windlass company!
That said, I have to add that I tried unsuccessfully, to rig a snubber,
several ways. We finally got it right on boat #2. It seems my properly sized
hook simply would not stay hooked! I didn't use a long enough loop of chain.
I do not anchor out unless I have to since it is so difficult for me to get
the dog, small as he is, overboard and into the dinghy, and back onboard
again.
My 2 cents worth!
