The commercial reel winches used on fishing boats world wide, don't have any
major problems in daily use in salt water. They use various rodes--from iron
cables, SS Cables, rope and various sizes of chain. The bulk and "cosmetics"
generally keep them from being used on yachts. However some vessels do use
    them.

A winch can be reel type or drum type. For example sailboat winches are just
a drum which the rope is wraped several turns around--and often has a "self
tailing" mechanism. Large tugs use both open winches drum type and reel
    type.

A windlass is for bringing up the anchor. The windlass may have a chain gypsy
and may also have a rope capstan.
