Does anyone ever done or seen a sailboat to trawler conversion...

The link below shows a motorsailer that might be a potential candidate...

The engine is a bit small for a "motor only" boat requiring full power to
    maintain hull speed

5k initial purchase and another 5-8k in conversion and I could have
a "Texas ditch boat" for less than 15k...

If anyone has any links to similar projects or better yet, first hand
experience and are willing to share, contact me,

    Jason,

This would be a fantastic conversion. The sailboat, Watkins 27. is already a motorsailer and the conversion could be completed simply by pulling the mast. I agree that 15 hp is low for a trawler but I would caution about replacing the small engine with one of significantly greater horsepower. No matter what you do, the boat will not greatly exceed it's hull speed or about 7 knots. A maximum of 30 hp, say one of the three cylinder Yanmars, would be about right. And keep the mast and sails handy. You may decide to refit them for a long, long trip. Nothing beats sails for emergency "get home" power. Besides, with the price of fuel escalating, sails may become the engine of the future.
