Another thought about combo Washer/dryer units. We had a combo unit on our boat, and it looked great. The Admiral decided to use it one day, and that was the end of that. She washed one load and then told me that she would never, ever, use that %$#&%$ thing again. She said that once you press the start button to begin the wash/dry cycle, it had to go through the entire wash cycle, then the dry cycle, and then a 10 minute cool down cycle, before she could open the door to the unit again. By the time she could open the door, all of the clothes were wrinkled beyond recognition. Clearly, the German or Swedish engineer who designed it didn't do much laundry at home.
I went to Lowes and bought a Whirlpool washer and separate dryer. Small apartment-size units, both of which are front-loading. Fortunately, after removing a cabinet and a couple of shelves I had room to install the units side-by-side. It took a little plumbing and electrical work (with the help of an electrician friend), but now the admiral is happy, and I may just get some clean clothes out of the deal without having to cart the laundry to a laundramat. On our boat, a happy admiral is a cooperative admiral...
