A quick follow-up on my Hynautic steering problem. After some serious bleeding
and re-bleeding, the upper helm would work flawlessly for an hour or so and
then, just when I'd try to straighten out from a right turn on the river, I'd
find the wheel spinning uselessly to the left and I'd have to run below to
straighten out.
Guy who serviced my helm pump said it sounded like a erratic shuttle valve.
Sent him the pump; he bench tested the unit. Replicated my problem. Bad
shuttle valve. The valve was made of steel in an aluminum cylinder. It had
wallowed out the softer metal and would hang up from time to time. The choice
was to wait 3-4 weeks for a replacement base to come in or buy a new one. Guy
gave me a $100 credit for the old pump and shipped me a new pump last week.
Should be here today or tomorrow.
I capped off the upper helm so if we have to move Cigano because of this
storm, I can con her from below.
Regards.
Larry
