The problem is that under the Santorum bill, the NWS might have to stop
delivering it's weather info. (that you and I have already paid for in our
taxes) via Internet or some other means. The VHF weather radio stations are
unclear, since someone MIGHT want to do that commercially, inserting lots of
commercials, etc. How'd you like that? Who knows about weatherfaxes or
NAVTEX broadcasts that come from NWS. I use the NWS for LOTS of forecasts,
but take a look at the two below. The pinpoint forecast from NWS is almost
always dead on, while the Weather Channel for the same spot is frequently
wrong.
Take a look and see which you would prefer... the top one may go away under
the Santorum bill.
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?CityName=League%20City&state=TX&site=hgx
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USTX0745?from=search_city
There are lots of other NWS links that will go away under this bill, such
as:
http://weather.noaa.gov/fax/marine.shtml Weatherfax charts.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/home.htm Take a look at this page and look
at all the products and services you will lose direct access to. Again,
remember what that weather channel site looked like. Oh yea, to get to that
page, I had to type in "League City, TX" and I had to go through a screen
from Hotels.com, who wanted to know if I needed to book a room, or was
traveling to League City. Sheesh.
Another thing about NWS... most of these other services do their own
forecasting, but still consult the NWS forecast to double check themselves,
and come up with a "consensus" forecast. The more opinions the better, but
at least here, NWS is THE authority, and the others a distant second.
