I have missed out on this thread and don't know exactly what the debate is
about.
That said, I could make a few comments about the NWS.
There have been and still are plenty of times when I think that closing
them down might not be a bad idea. Some of the offices, especially from San
Francisco south are pretty ineffective. I don't have much experience with
those on the east and gulf coasts. But, what I have seen did not impress me
much.
On the other hand, offices like Eureka CA are probably about as good as
anything that could be hoped for, private or governmental. The quality of
work done by the various offices varies quite a bit and seems to be worst
near major metropolitan areas. Note that Eureka is the only coastal West
Coast NWS office, NOT located in a major metro area. (Monterey CA office is
pretty close to a major area and serves one). Since I pass by a large
section of coast on a regular basis and have for over 40 years, I have some
idea what the changes have been like.
The NWS has it's share of problems with uneven quality from area to area.
This would not likely improve under any privatization scheme. As mariner's,
generally we have been forced to get our weather info by listening to the
various wx channels, 1-10. This is rapidly changing. as I and others have
reported. In the past few weeks, I have used voice cell phone, globalstar,
iridium, weather channel marine, wifi, cell phone data, cell phone SMS,
and the weather channels to get the weather info I want. That's a LOT of
sources and means. Most of which was not available 3 years ago.
The data gotten has come from FNMOC, various NWS web sites and some
university sites. The EVOLUTION is coming! How this will all play out and
what part the NWS should play is going to get a lot of debate.
If I have time over the weekend, I will take some time and try to summarize
my take on the factors that make up the wx resources on the US West Coast.
I have been thinking about just this topic over the past month or so and it
seems that the time to post those thoughts has come.

Mike
