Hello Everyone! Thanks for all the terrific responses I've received from all
you T & T people regarding my inquiry about Universal trawlers and Ford
Lehman engines. Seems like trawlering people have the same kind of camaraderie as
us (soon to be ex) rag sailors do! What a wonderful surprise! But, you know
what Water Rat said, "There is nothing -- absolute NOTHING -- half so much
worth doing as simply messing-about in boats." And I think any kind of boat
qualifies.
So, ok, I've had the engine survey. Hoses, belts (crucial because of dual
belt alternator), exhaust flow to the muffler, heat exchanger, and maybe one or
two other items I can't remember. Oh, yeah, the injector pump seems to have
not been installed to his liking, either. There's a 'noisy' piston in number 6
cylinder and he's not sure whether that's bad or not...there's no puff (still
compressing ok) so he's inclined to think we should just 'watch it' to see if
it gets worse. Other than that I think the surveyor though all was well,
though I could tell that if it was HIS boat he'd certainly put things 'to
right!'. I asked him what it would cost to 'put things to right', and he said about
4K...but then there are the engine mounts which are about ready to be replaced
(they're the 'good' ones that isolate the vibration) and a dual fuel filter
setup and a sound shield for the generator (yamaha 3.3kw -NOISY!) and a larger
battery bank and a larger inverter and, and, and. I think I'll be very busy
and very broke for a long time with this boat. Smiling all the way to the poor
house. Sheesh!
Thanks again everybody. Keep fingers crossed for financing - and vessel
survey 7/11!
