Next message: Peter Pisciotta: "T&T: Coastal vs Offshore"
Coincidently Larry, I was just musing on that general subject in the course
of writing up summaries of our just finished cruise (under power) in SW.
Florida, and you message flashed up. At one point during that trip I mentioned to
the crew that open water cruising wasn't that appealing to me, for most of
the reasons you mentioned. I find that picking our way through shallows,
channels and currents to be much more of a "sport" and certainly requiring of more
moment to moment engagement. Add to that dealing with the doings of one's
fellow boaters, particularly on the ICW and it seems increasingly that one is
engaged in a level of "defensive driving" worthy of I-95 from West Palm to
Homestead.
I write this from the perspective of a purely recreational boater, whose
four weeks (in a good year) on the water spread over the course of 12 months
makes each day boating a day of sport, not necessity. The journey being the
destination if you will.
I have a very little experience off shore-- and found it much more
interesting under sail than power, given the constant quest to make the most of the
wind available. But not as interesting on the whole as coastal adventures.
George
