T&T: Anchor thoughts

I just ordered a Rocna 15 (33lbs) and my friend ordered the 20 (44lbs). They
should be down here in Key Largo in about 10 days. I will try them out in
the light jello covered with grass in Tarpon Basin. My 44lb supermax will fall
onto its back with the maw up in the air and slide thru this stuff without
holding at all. The shank is so heavy that it penetrates an inch or two into it
and allows the maw to remain sticking up in the air. Very disconcerting. My
delta 35lb just plows through it, even with 75ft of 3/8 chain on it. Then it
fills with grass and dosent hold at all. Same with the CQR. There is a lot
of bottom like that down here. I am hoping the Rocna will penetrate to the
lower, thicker mud levels and build up enough to hold well in this soup.

I think the supermax is good for sand and heavier mud, but it seems like the
very large maw presents a very long surface to the bottom for penetration. If
there is anything on the bottom that blocks penetration, it affects the whole
long surface and stops the anchor from going in. So, conclusion on this
anchor is that it is great when it sets but there are definitely some bottoms that
it dosen't do well in. I will keep it of course and use it in bottoms that
are appropriate but I don't have the desire to put my back thru multiple trys
to set it in jello like bottoms, and crank the manual windlass I have up front.

will let the list know what happens
