    Jim,
I have twin 3116TA's in my boat. Some like to say they are the "motors
from Hell" , but so far my experience has been good. I would second
Scott's recommendation to use the CAT filters. They are very high quality
filters. Also, buy the CAT raw water pump impellers. They sell a very
inexpensive tool to remove the threaded CAT impellers. Makes getting them
out a snap......oh how I have struggled with "water pump pliers" and gear
puller types. I have found the service dept's at both Holtsville, LI and
Newington, CT to be very helpful. They run a one day clinic in the Spring
for 3116 & 3208s which is real helpful, if you like being hands on.
    Good luck!

    Hi Jim,
We currently own our third boat with Cat 3208N engines. We have found them
    to
    be robust and reliable engines.
The Cat manual specifies oil changes at 200 hours. Two of our three boats
    had
installed a 90 degree fitting off of the oil pan drain with a hose/fitting
    for
changing the oil. If you do not have this, you could install same at the
    first
oil change for +/- $25 per engine. Used in conjunction with a 12v. oil
    change
pump, it makes changing the oil a snap. Of course, the OA may have an oil
change pump plumbed in. The hard part is changing the filters. The best I
    have
come up with is to use a zip-lock baggie around the filter before
    loosening
it. A fair amount of oil will run out when the gasket seal is broken.
I feel that the most important spares to carry are zincs, belts, and a raw
water pump. In my experience it is best to carry an entire spare pumpas
opposed to simply having impellers. We have never had an impeller go out,
    but
have had the mechanical seal go on 2 pumps, which is not really a field
    fix.
Note that the Cat parts book lists a dizzying array of belts. I was able
    to
glean a Cat number off one of the installed belts, and it was not one
    listed
in the manual! So determine that you have the right belt by installing
    same,
and keep the original as a spare.
We have an account at the local Cat dealer for our business, and use them
    for
spares. I am sure that I could save a few bucks a year by using Baldwin or
    ?
filters, but it seems so cheap and easy to use the Cat filters... they
    seem
reasonably priced. Also, a good parts counter man can be a lifesaver.
Good luck and enjoy your new boat!!
    Regards,
    Scott Gordon
