John,
I installed a 2000 inverter with a 100 AMP BUILT IN CHARGER about four years
ago and soon realized that I had made a mistake by sizing based on usage
requirements rather than CHARGING requirements.
By upgrading to an inverter with 125 or 130 amps of charging capacity you
will save hundreds of hours of generator run time if you plan to do any serious
cruising with this boat. I must run my generator a little over 4 hours on
an average day while cruising to keep my batteries charged but would be able
to cut that run time by about 1 hour per day had I upgraded to a 130 amp hour
charger in the beginning.
Over the last 5 years I have spent over 500 nights away from marinas while
cruising and that would have saved over 500 hours of generator run time and all
of the fuel, wear and tear on the equipment, plus the fact that the noisy
gen set will disturb you one less hour each day in some quiet anchorage.
If you have a house bank or plan to upgrade to a house bank of batteries
that will accept the additional charge you would be wise to spend the money up
front for the larger unit.
