Basically, as a generalization, you should not have a
problem if you use quality equipment. Galvanized is
always best but nice bright stainless anchors look
good on the prow. It is however important to have
quality chain as there is a lot of cheap imported
rubbish on the market, use UK or US manufacturers and
I would recommend Hi Test. Apart from what some claim,
size IS important, but this depends on the weight of
your boat. 3/8 Hi test has a WL of approx 5,400
whereas 5/16 has a WL of 3,900 (but weighs less and
    you can store more chain).

ALL chain should be taken out of the locker every 12
months, laid out and inspected for any damaged links.
Damaged links or badly corroded ones should be
replaced; chain can be joined using appropriate sized
split links. The chain should also be reversed at this
time to even out the wear. One further point, if a
swivel is used make sure that it has the same WL as
the chain! (and cheap is bad). Splice 10' of nylon
line to the bitter end and attach it to the boat, that
way if you get caught up you can buoy the chain, cut
it off and pick it up later. We once surveyed a 42'
cruiser whose only ground tackle was 100' of rusty
chain permanently bolted to the bulkhead!
