After reading about the problems with mixed metals in ground tackle, I'm
curious as to how big a problem is it. I love the look of my polished
stainless steel anchored and the effectiveness of my aluminum Fortress, but in
both cases the chain is galvanized. My primary anchor is a 60# SS CQR with SS
swivel. I have noticed that the first and second link in the chain has some
minor surface rust, I suspect the results of electrolysis. I'm also betting
that the more salinity in the water the bigger the potential problem might be.
But how big is the problem? Is it one that would take months continuous use
to have any potential ill affects? Would I be able to realize the problem by
just inspecting the first couple of galvanized chain links, or should I worry
about more (the entire length of chain in the water, or worse yet, the SS
Swivel that has a pin in the middle of the swivel that's not visible). That
leads to the question of what will fail, always the galvanized compoenents or
could it be the SS or aluminum?
Curious,
Gil
