i have an 18kw norpro with isuzu engine. it's about 2 1/2 year old with
1300 hours.
short story... i'd buy one again... good unit, terrific price.
long story :
- great sound shield, easy to remove, yet strong enough to step on it.
- self bleeding after filter change, jsut turn on the key to run the fule
pump a couple of minutes before firing up.
- good access to all components.
the only problems I've had with it have been caused be a lousy installation
by the previous owner. when i got the boat, the genset was 6 months old and
had 100 hours. it was running fine, no issues. 2 years later and 1200 hours,
it ingested massive amount of water overfilling the crank case... it
woudln't even shut down, i had to quickly open it up after i noticed the
massive smnoke out of the exhaust, rip the air filter out and stuff a rag.
the norpro mechanic said the exhaust wasn't installed correcly: hose looped
up from the exit thru the sound shield to the muffler located 2' higher than
the lowest point. Drained, flushed with diesel, then oil, then pulled the
head out to fix damaged valves... reinstaled the head... then the damn thing
re ingested water depsite the exhaust having been re located.
this time around, I looked into it myself and realized that the exhaust
manifold was at sea level, or jsut below, and no syphon break loop had been
installed between the pump and manifold. Not only did the original installer
screw up but the guy (norpro approved shop) who re did the head and exhaust
re isntalled never checked to see if a syphon break was needed. Added one,
flushed and re filled with clean oil, no problem since.
the mystery was why did it take 1200 hours to ingest water? the mechanic
couldn't believe it. reason seems that for the first 1200 hours i woiud
alsways run the genset while running the boat. When i installed an inverter
and started running the boat without the genset being on, rolling motion
lead to water coming in....
now last week end, I noticed one digital clock running a little slow while
on genset. losing 30minutes in 24 hours. i just received a frequency meter
(nice little gadget btw... plugs in any outlet and displays
voltage/frequency) so I'm going to check if it puts out exactly 60hz. my
guess is that the mechanic didn't check that it was tunring exactly 1800 rpm
after reinstalling the head ... 3 rd mistake they made! so much for pros...
