Yikes! It is interesting to note that Hatteras is switching where possible
to CATs in their line - although the customer can still prescribe in most
cases. They say CAT has improved ("C" Series) and reduced size (I had
previously remarked on how that could be a mixed bag) thus giving more
engine room access that MTU/DD which they still install. They also remarked
that they had received engines with metal chips in them which required
engine replacement, but did not name the brand. These larger engines cost
$250,000 each!
They get their engines (both CAT and MTU) from Covington Diesel here in
North Carolina. I suspect that the combined buying power of these two
companies is sufficient to get the manufacturer's attention.
It sounds like blind stupidity on CATs part. Their physically larger,
workboat, marine engines have a good reputation. One of our T&T members is
buillding his aluminum (or steel?) boat in the PNW with a CAT commercial
duty engine. BTW, I have heard from two sources that CAT 3208 Turbos have
significant problems at 2000 hours. A friend replaced his twin's oil coolers
for $8,000. This model engine is found in many Grand Banks "trawlers."
