I don't know what is available in the Great Lakes area, but let me offer a
couple of alternatives in pleasant-to-visit climes:
First, there is Club Nautique on San Francisco Bay. I took a series of 2-3
day classes from them, leading up from single screw to twin screw trawler type
vessels (Mainships), including an over night cruising course. This is the
best money I have ever spent in boating. It covered not just boat handling, but
navigation, MOB, anchoring, rules of road, systems, and so on. I had
experience in boating, but you had to take these classes to get certified to charter
out of their fleet. One of those cases of not knowing what you didn't know..

You can take these over time and they are scheduled on weekends. Out of
towners can arrange to stay on the boat.
I have also heard good things about the classes offered by Florida Sailing
and Cruising School, they have a series of power classes out of SW Fl. taught
on trawlers:

You might also check out Chapmans, but I have no first or second hand
experience there.
The big benefit of this approach is the thoroughness, structure and
methodology of the training. The teachers have an ulterior motive, and that is to get
you qualified to charter their boats, enjoy the experience and not wreck
them. That is a good thing for you!
George
