    Under 20 meters, the COLREGS no longer require a bell. See Rule 33,
    modifications to same, dated Nov. 2003.

    However, see rule 35. Boats over 12 meters and less than 20, shall make
    some other efficient sound signal at intervals of 2 minutes.

    I take this to mean that you should expect to make the sounds on a bell,
    but that it does not have to be a regulation specified bell. In other words
    it doesn't have to be 8 inches. The ICOM loud hailer in bell mode should be
    sufficient, I think.

    Since the CG does not appear to be expecting the bell to be aboard, but you
    can be found at fault in an accident, you may want to be able to comply
    with the new more minimal requirements. Choose your weapon!
