It is very important to read the M-88 manual on initial charging and
subsequent charging. This M-88's battery can be damaged by overcharging. I'm
afraid that ICOM left out the battery electronics which both Sony and Nikon
(and others, perhaps) use to permit the Lithium Ion battery to just sit in
the charger. Therefore, you must adhere to the instructions. In most cases,
the battery arrives almost fully charged.
I noted that Hobucken USCG personnel were wearing the M-88, although I
suspect they may be carrying an "intrinsically safe" version.

| I'm a super-satisfied M-88 owner too. It is a little more expensive but
| well worth the difference as compared to other handhelds that I've owned
| (IMO). I purchased the cable and software that allows you to re-program
the
| extra 22 channels so I can also use the handheld for EMT and fire
| frequencies when I'm home - I give it a lot of use. It seems to work and
| last forever on a single charge. The charger shows you when it is
| completely charged which is another nice feature.
