i had the same reaction whe I first saw the articles, annoucmenets, etc...
but this is not a replacement for conventional stern drive, it's a
replacement for high speed inboards and and large inboard prop had no
protection either. You can't compare the IPS and a convention stern drive
unit.
granted, on an inboard the strut and shaft may offer limited protection and
deflect the log but they usually take a big hit as well. Best case scenario
you bend the shaft and prop.. worst... everything gets ripped out.
time will tell how it works in the real world, but the benefits seem to be
very real.
