I'm certain that reliable digital engine controls can be made. As you
pointed out, they are in commercial aircraft. But at what cost? Yes,
perhaps commercial passenger vessels above a certain rated capacity should
be required to have this level of sophistication. But I don't think Mom and
Pop will pay the costs required to implement it on their boat, at least not
in the immediate term. I think what we'll see is a gradual improvement as
various failure modes are discovered. But I doubt we'll ever get to truly
redundant and fault detecting / correcting engine controls in recreational
or small commercial vessels.
