    >Reply: 100 hour oil change intervals! I've always thought this interval
to be 200 - 300 hours or once a season, whichever is more frequent. I
personally have always went with 200 hours on both Cummins and Yanmars.

In the case of the Lehman 120, the manufacturer's oil change interval
recommendation is 200 hours for the main sump, 50 hours for the Simms
injection pump. Some people including myself prefer a 100-hour oil
change interval for engines, but there are different reasons for it. In
my case, I sort of have 100-hour oil changes on the brain from my
involvement with aircraft. Also, our local diesel shop recommends 100
hour oil changes for marine diesels. However the reason behind the
shop's recommendation is, I believe, based on the average use of most
recreational boats, which is 100 hours per year or less. So changing
oil every 100 hours will ensure that on average, boats will get their
oil changed about once a year. Sitting unused with dirty oil can almost
be as bad for an engine as running with dirty oil.

For boats that are laid up for the winter and not used at all, our shop
recommends an oil change immediately prior to laying it up for the
winter. This ensures the engine will sit through the winter with clean
    oil in it.

I've stated before my reasons for preferring to change oil and filters
every 100 hours. Oil is cheap (so far), no one's ever told me fresh oil
is bad for an engine, and with an oil change interval half the
manufacturer's recommendation, there is some slop in when I do it. We
don't feel we shouldn't use the boat because we're at 100 hours but we
haven't had a chance to change the oil and filters yet.
