    Tom, Randy and all,

    >We are suffering from a common affliction. My Maxwell went T.U. and I need

The original Maxwell windlass on the Celestial died of drowning....

I could not find anyone locally who could fix it as the brush holders had
melted from shorts caused by salt water intrusion. Also, the armature had
been worn down to where it appeared to be totally non-repairable. It had a
Lucas automotive starter motor in it that was no longer available. I
emailed Maxwell (Australia) and told them of my dilemma. The email was
almost instantly forwarded to Maxwell America (or something like that) in
California. They sent me an email suggesting that I send the motor to them
and quoted a guestimated repair price. I sent the motor to them and
essentially got a new motor back, as they had completely rebuilt it,
installing new brush holders and what appeared to be new armature segments
that the brushes ride on. New bearings, too. I forget what the total price
was, but as I recall, it was less than their guestimate. The windlass now
    works perfectly.

I most highly recommend that you check with them before doing anything else
with it. I do not know if they work on any other windlasses except Maxwell,
but almost all of the older windlasses used automotive starter motors - so
you have a good chance of getting the motor repaired. In a day when it is
hard to find competent, responsive repair facilities, I found Maxwell's to
    be superb.

I posted an email about the repairs on my old motor ..... should still be
    in the archives.

    Take care and be safe.
