I have a Raymarine unit and wouldn't buy from them again. See the archives
for more detail, but in short it went out and took them a couple of months
to "fix" and return it, and it still didn't work. Good thing I wasn't on a
voyage at the time. Furuno seems to be the unit of choice.
That all being said, I'd stick with a dedicated unit, 4kw open array if you
can afford it, but dome would be just about as good. Frankly, who cares if
that blip turns out to be one or two boats when you get closer... I sure
hope you're not going to try to thread your way down the middle in the fog!
As far as the display, color is nice if you can afford it, ditto with larger
sizes. The original posted was pretty much right on... "get what your budget
will allow".
