"...I've got a 30 year old Lehman 120 with the OEM Sims pump. What are the
smallest particles I need to worry about?.."

My GUESS is likely not much. Only your engine manufacturer will know for sure
but the long engine life so far suggests it's doing ok. At a hundred or two
hundred hours annually does it make much difference? At a thousand hours
annually, a 2 micron filter is likely a good idea.

Clearly, particulate matter in fuel may impact pumps and injectors and
that's why engines come equipped with fuel filters. Even my 33 year old Detroits
have engine mounted fuel filters and I replace them with OEM filters every other
year. I never checked what micron size they are rated. I have primary racors
of 2 microns and those are vacuum gauge monitored, but I change them annually
whether they need it or not just to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Now submicron particles in lubricating oil would be nice to remove, and the
only way to do that is with a bypass filter of some kind. But engines used for
recreational purposes last a long, long time without them.
