Would a single 155 HP be too underpowered?

Michael, the NP-42 was on my short list and I traded many mails with Trevor at North Pacific, a really great guy to deal with. The Passagemaker article someone else spoke of is a good article on the boat, as is the information on their web page. Although, never making the trip to Vancouver to see the boat, I would suggest that this boat is high on the value for price scale.

For comparison I looked at several new Mariners for quality and workmanship. The reason to look at the Mariner is because both boats are built by the same plant. Most major systems are name brand, so that shouldn't be a big concern. The workmanship for the price is what I believed to be very good. There are some things that they could improve on, and I believe Trevor is actually doing so. He had orders for all boats being built through the Fall of 2005, which isn't bad when he only had hull #1 to show and anyone wanting to see it had to go Canada or the Seattle show it was in.

As for power, I'd suggest a single Cummins 370 or whatever is in that HP range. Keep in mind that NP is going to have to raise their prices when forced to use the electronically controlled engines in 2006 or earlier based on the availbility of existing mechanically controlled engines. Hull #1 was equipped with twins, I think 250s. Using the Mariner as my baseline, I wouldn't put the quality up there with many of the other available boats in the class. With that said, the $100K savings may very well be worth a slight sacrifice in quality.

    Just my opinion,

    Gil
