Bill, you asked that I let you know the results of my question about boat
horns. The responses came in three general categories. One, take my current
horn apart and clean the connections and other internal parts. Corrosion is a
likely culprit. If that doesn't solve my problem, then I either go with a 12V
electric horn to replace the one I currently have, or change over to an air
horn.
The consensus of the group seems to be that Kahlenburg air horns are the top
of the line, and if one can afford $2500 or so, one would have a great horn.
I doubt that I would ever convince the Admiral (or me for that matter) to
spend that much for a horn, so if I go that route I'll get a lesser quality air
horn. If I stay with 12V it seems to be the consensus that Ongaro makes a very
good 12V horn with SS components that owners seem to be very happy with.
I think my course of action is going to be to attempt to clean mine
internally and attempt to fix it. Failing that, I'm going to check with some friends
around our marina who have air horns and get them to let me crawl around to see
how difficult it would be to install an air horn sustem on my boat. If that
appears to be above my skill level I most likely will get the Ongaro system.
Hope that helps.
Mike
