    Modern lightweight anchors such as the Fortress and the Danforth are designed
    to dig deeper when pulled in the backward direction without shortening the
    scope. If your anchor is buried in a good holding bottom, either clay or hard
    packed sand, your boat may not have enough reverse thrust to break the anchor
    out. Either that or the rode will break.

    The correct method for pulling the anchor is to shorten the scope as much as
    possible, preferably by pulling the boat right over the anchor, cleat the rode
    or use a chain stopper, and let wave action pull the anchor out of the
    bottom. If this doesn't work, move forward until the anchor breaks free.

    I'll go with Bob on this one.
