Having just completed a trip from TX to FL I can report that almost everyone I encountered was very polite and helpful. The exception was the bridge operators. I had one bridge operator on waterway connecting the GIWW to Lake Ponchatrain nearest the Intercoastal Lock that would not respond unless called by his bridge name; not even to horn signals. After some time and finally hailing a tug I was able to get the bridge's name. Once signalled by name, the bridge operator responded. It may seem reasonable to call the bridge by name; especially, when there are several in radio range. Many are plainly marked and others you can figure out if your charting software can display raod names. But for the others, it's difficult to determine their name. If it's expected, shouldn't all charts include the bridge's name?
Besides this one bridge operator and the poor weather, we really had a great trip from Clear Lake TX to Yankeetown, FL.
