As I mentioned earlier, the West brand rope was priced *higher* than New
England on the same shelf. I'll admit that the West line peaking out of the
carton looked like the New England line, but that means nothing. Cheap
stranded nylon completely unlays when you go to splice it. I must say that
the New England spliced eyes were not served and the ends were poorly melted
closed, but New England has proven its superiority in review after review.
Of interest to us, it always rates high on abrasion resistance. Just a
former subscriber to "Practical Sailor" and a current one to "PowerBoat
Reports."

| 2. There are rebates and hidden cost returns you never
| see that private branding makes possible. For instance
| XX manufactuer may not be able to lower its price
| because of the need to have pricing integrity with
| other cuistomers (read small retailers), but if vendor
| private labels it, then cost can be adjusted downward
| freely for the same item, since the label now hides
| the identity of manufactuer.
| Problem is many retailers go private label for
| increased profits, caring not for a quality focus with
| pride behind the name.
