Sight glasses will become fouled and un-useable. As well, you introduce
more locations for potential leaks.
The "simplistic" system on my older Sea Ray involves three electrodes
manufactured from 1/4" all-thread. The electrodes are suspended from a top
Screw-on lid and each electrode is of differing lengths. One length is
calibrated to 3/4 full and the other to 7/8 full. The third electrode is
connected to ground and the others run through a LED panel light to 12 VDC.
The light comes on when the level in the tank encounters the "common" and
level electrode. The electrolytes from the waste products produce excellent
conductivity. If you want more levels monitored, add more electrodes and
lights.
One change I made to the original design was to change the electrodes from
brass to stainless steel which has greatly increased the probe life. As
well I use heat shrink tube to smooth the all-thread surface to limit gunk
adhering to the electrodes.
I bought the all-thread from Home Depot.

Subject: T&T: another holding tank guage question!
I can't quite give up on this.
I'd like to have a simple guage for the holding tank. Right or wrong, I'm
not interested in fancy electrical gizzies; I'm a real fan of less is more,
especially in the electrical dept.
So.... what about a "sight tube" much like folks might do w/ fuel?
I'm not too concerned with solids etc; by the time things are pumped away
into the tank, things should be pretty mushed up.
Thanks
JE
yes an "unsightly" sight tube!
