The boat we recently purchased has an Onan MDJF 15KW generator. It was
obvious when we bought the boat that the genny was leaking a little oil. On
our five day trip to bring her home to New Orleans from Galveston, I
probably added 2-3 quarts total. Now it is leaking much more. I have to shut
it down every 6-8 hours or so and add at least 2 quarts.
I can't tell where it is leaking. The unit is sitting directly on a drip
pan, in which the leaking oil accumulates. I have looked all over the areas
of the generator that I can get to and cannot see anything what would
indicate a leak in those areas. Of course, the whole genny is kind of a mess
(on our to-do list), and it would be difficult to see a minor leak. But I
would think this much of a leak would be obvious.
So, I have a couple of questions. First, where should I be looking for a
leak like this? Is there a common point on the engine where this happens? A
failed seal? Pan gasket? Second, is the repair of this something I could
tackle myself, or should I contact a mechanic to come have a look?
This is my first boat with diesels, and a generator. So my experience with
these things is nil. Guess I am going to have to learn fast!
Thanks,
Ken Tischler
