Some of the more modern operating systems, including Apple's OS 10.3., Linux,
and the "any day now" Microsoft Longhorn prefer that the computer remain on
constantly. The programs provide automatic maintenance and cleanup on a daily,
weekly, and monthly basis. It is possible to do these procedures manually -
but many of us tend to forget. Manufacturers advise never to shut your
computers
or laptops off unless you are not going to use them for several days. Rather
put them into a "sleep" mode. This turns off the display and rotating parts
but keeps a small amount of electricity to keep the memory alert. The
advantage
is that the computer starts up very rapidly instead of having to go through
the normal several minute reboot cycle.
