Thanks, Ron, but the gear came with the boat!

To their credit, I got a 'phone call from a tech support guy at Xantrex,
within an hour of emailing my complaint to them. It pays to complain in the right
places. Evidently, he was instructed to make me happy (not his words - my
impression). He suggested I try cleaning the contacts on the transfer relay with a
file, and to "put pressure on the front panel while tightening the cover
screws." Hmmm. I'll be doing that today.

This doesn't solve Xantrex's problem, but have you tried the vendor from
whom you purchased the gear? For the rest of us, it may be time to look at
Mastervolt or Charles Industries. Newmar has highly rated chargers, but
integrated inverter/chargers seem to offer higher amperage chargers to cope
    with our large house banks.
