For those of you really techy types I recommend these two development group
sites which are the centers for industry knowledge on CDMA (Sprint and Verizon
primarily in the US) and GSM (Cingular/ATT and T-Mobile) particularly as it
relates to the current development and deployment of 2nd 2.5, and 3rd
generation data networks. I recommend the white paper "GPRS to HPSDA" plus the EDGE
fact sheet on 3g Americas, and the various 3G or CDMA related submenus on
the cdg page I linked. EDGE, EVDO, UTMS/WCDMA are all being rolled out here as
we speak, available in various US markets right now. EDGE and 1xrtt (the GSM
and CDMA 50-100kbps services) are close to ubiquitous. Amazing the progress
since the FAQs Mike posted were developed just a year or two ago. You ain't
seen nothin' yet, the amount of development going on not just the carriers but
content, software, middleware, nework equipment guys is intense. It's
happening fast because voice service is becoming a commodity, and the technology has
been deployed in Asia and Europe for awhile.
If anyone would like my professional spin on the subject, let me know.
There is quite a bit going on to unify and make seamless the wi-fi, wi-max,
private SMR and cellular data worlds. Disclaimer: My company has a division that
activates Cingular GSM service in North and central Texas and Arkansas
(consumer, government and corporate); another division wholesales cellular equipment
to small retailers and rural carriers. We are land-use focused.
