Actually it isn't really a more "powerful" antenna in an amplified sense.
They instead are just better tuned and directionally sensitive, instead of
being omni-directional like the card for your laptop.
One tip for getting around the poor reception problem of PCMCIA WiFi cards
is to buy a USB WiFi adapter. Then, using a long distance USB extension
cable, you can mount the receiver up on deck, on the flybridge, in the
eyebrow, or where ever gets it up high and out of the weather.
For those that like to experiment instead of buying off the shelf
hardware.... hmm, doesn't sound like anybody here... check out making your
own WiFi antenna from a tin can:
