    >These are made by a "marine hose manufacturer" but you can bet I'll be
down at PepBoys selecting a hose for a raw water intake before I'll use
    one of em.

Given the cost of a boat, moorage, fuel, insurance, upgrading
electronics, and so on, I find it hard to think that the comparatively
miniscule savings one might realize by buying an auto hose at PepBoys
vs. buying a marine-rated hose at a marine outlet is worth the risk.
It's not like we're buying hose to plumb a ten-story building here.
We're talking a few feet of hose at best, twice that if you have a twin.
Regardless of whether the marine hose has stainless reinforcing wire,
plastic reinforcing wire, or reinforcing wire made from seal toenails,
if you buy a reputable brand of marine hose designed for whatever your
application is, you can pretty much count on it working in the marine
environment for a hell of a long time. I have a hard time seeing how
saving five or ten or even twenty bucks to not have that advantage is a
plus. I'd sure rather put something into the boat and be able to say,
"I know this will work," than put something into the boat and say, "I
think this will work." Especially if that something is an item that the
health of my engines is going to be depending on.
