>Why would it be reinforced with anything? After all unless you have a
hydraulic system what's the most pressure a hose on a boat will see?
The issue isn't pressure, it's suction. Depending on your engine's raw
water system and the layout of the raw water intake components, there
can be enough pull from the raw water pump to at least partially
collapse the raw water feed hose when the engine is running if the hose
is too soft. This can restrict the water flow through the raw water
cooling system with the potential for higher temperatures in the engine
and transmission. As I mentioned before, we had this exact problem in
our boat when a too-flexible hose was installed as part of the sea
strainer system we had put into the boat after we bought it. The hose
was the correct size and brand new from a reputable manufacturer, but it
was the wrong type of hose for the job. Our diesel shop spotted the
problem right away and replaced this hose with a stainless wire
reinforced hose. Oddly enough, the yard that did the original
installation used the correct type of hose on the other engine's raw
water system. Why they got one right and one wrong is a mystery that
will never be solved, since the yard has since gone out of business.
