I have had about half of my windlasses horizontal and half vertical.

I have never had problem tailing a vertical windlass, with sufficient warps (I
like at least 4 full turns of line on the drum. The major advantage of a
vertical windlass is that it is easier to use for wraping a boat around or two
a dock--one can use snatch blocks with a horizontal--but most trawlers are not
    set up for snatch blocks.
