    I suppose it's possible. I've encountered grey whales on the Bay many
    times. Even had one surface between side by side racing Islander 30 II
    sailboats on the beat up the shore from the St. Francis YC to Blackaller
    Buoy. I was sure it was going to hit us, but somehow it managed to dive
    and avoid the keel/rudder. Talk about an adrenalin rush!
