>That's to allow the snubber to stretch. If you don't have any slack
chain between the snubber hook and where the chain attaches to the boat,
the snubber can't stretch and do it's job.
I understand the need for slack in the chain to allow the snubber to
stretch and absorb shock. But the loops I'm talking about go from the
bow roller down to perhaps three or four feet below the surface and
then back up to the chain hook or grabber which is a foot or two below
the surface. The only way the snubber would need that much allowance
for stretch was if it was made of bungee cord. And since this extra
chain and weight is between the chain hook and the bow roller, it
doesn't function as a kellet because the angle of the chain rode is
being set by the snubber. Putting weight behind the chain hook wouldn't
seem to accomplish much of anything. Putting a weight (kellet)
somewhere between the chain hook and the anchor would help reduce the
angle of the chain coming off the anchor. But putting the weight aft of
the hook on the snubber would just seem to increase the weight the
snubber line has to hold up. So at this point I'm not sure I see any
real advantage to putting a huge loop of chain between the roller and
chain hook.
