    My friend Ron keeps hoping that someone will agree with him and so far no
    takers. OK, here's an idea that requires careful calculation. A bridle to
    the chain with one snubber 3/8" and the other 5/8". You calculate the length
    of the 5/8" to take the load just as the 3/8" reaches 35% stretch. That way
    you have the best of both worlds and the 5/8", if long enough, will still
    give some elasticity to the chain rode. You should start with new line. I
    prefer New England rope in all cases - no connection.
